How we curate the numbers

Every revenue and usage value in the calculator is tied to a public filing, audited earnings release or a widely cited analyst report with transparent methodology. When no app-specific disclosure exists, we keep the best available estimate and flag that fact directly in the dataset. This page summarises the key sources used for each category so you can audit the provenance yourself.

Currency figures are normalised to USD using contemporaneous exchange rates where necessary. We only update entries when a newer, well-cited number appears; otherwise we retain the last defensible value and document the gap.

Social platforms

Large networks such as Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and Snapchat draw from 2024 company filings or analyst rollups. Smaller communities rely on the latest IPO documents or industry trackers.

Messaging

Messaging revenue is typically under-reported. Where companies do not disclose an app-level number we rely on triangulated analyst estimates and call out the limitation in-line.

Video and short form

Alphabet and Meta provide 2024 run rates for YouTube and Reels, while Shorts and Watch remain estimate-only. Twitch draws from Business of Apps aggregated revenue reporting.

Music and audio

Streaming platforms routinely publish detailed top-line results. Numbers here align with audited filings or widely cited industry conversions.

Games

Game economics depend heavily on platform fees and regional spend. We rely on publisher filings where available and otherwise cite the market trackers (Sensor Tower, Business of Apps, Newzoo) that regularly publish 2024 consumer spending data.

Creation tools

Creative suites span private and public companies. We surface the most recent credible statements and convert regional currency where necessary.

What happens when data is missing?

If a platform does not publish app-level revenue for 2024 and no high-quality analyst estimate exists, the dataset keeps the latest defensible number (often 2023) and documents the gap via the notes field. Future updates will raise the year and source as soon as audited information arrives.
